BMI calculator
Height and weight in, BMI and category out, plus the weight range considered healthy for your height.
BMI is a screening estimate, not a medical assessment. It does not distinguish muscle from fat.
Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
Weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. In imperial units the formula is weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared, times 703. A 5'10" person at 175 lb has a BMI of 25.1.
What are the BMI categories?
The WHO adult ranges: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is the healthy range, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. It cannot tell muscle from fat, so muscular people often score "overweight" while lean, and it is not designed for children, pregnancy, or adults over 65. Treat it as a population screening number, not a diagnosis.
What is a healthy weight for my height?
The range that puts BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. This calculator shows that range in your chosen units as soon as you enter a height.
