How conversions are calculated
Every unit is defined by its exact ratio to a base unit. An inch is exactly 25.4 mm, a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, a US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters. Converting multiplies into the base unit and divides out, so chained conversions stay consistent. Temperature is the exception: Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin are offset scales, so those use the standard offset formulas instead of a ratio.
