About temperature units

Temperature scales are offset, not proportional: zero Celsius is water's freezing point, zero Fahrenheit is an old brine-mixture benchmark, and zero Kelvin is absolute zero, the coldest anything can be. Because the zeros don't line up, conversion needs a formula rather than a multiplier: Fahrenheit equals Celsius times 9/5 plus 32. Handy anchors: 37°C is body temperature (98.6°F), 20°C is room temperature (68°F), and −40° is the one point where both scales agree.

Frequently asked questions

What is the exact formula for Fahrenheit to Kelvin?

Temperature scales are offset, not proportional. Convert to Celsius first, then to the target scale. For example, Fahrenheit to Celsius is (F - 32) x 5/9, and Celsius to Kelvin adds 273.15.

Is this conversion exact?

Yes. The offset formulas between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin are exact by definition. Displayed results are rounded to six decimal places.
